28-29. Soviet Aircraft Scattered Pamphlets

2627

While we were transporting food, Soviet fighter aircraft used to attack us with machine-gun fire.  It was a major problem.  One day, we noticed a regular aircraft that did not shoot, so we thought it was our ally.  The moment we screamed for joy, some pamphlets began to come down to us.  They came down slowly.  When we picked them up, we were so astonished because they were from the Soviet forces.  It said, "To the Japanese soldiers: Japan lost in the war.  Immediately hold up a white cloth and surrender."  We were indignant.  We just rolled them up and threw them away.

We, young soldiers, did not realize the reality that the unit had become like a scarecrow, without any support whatsoever.  They were so naïve to have fully trusted propaganda by the leaders of their army unit that they were brainwashed into believing they were invincible.
