All the Weed was Eaten Up

The number of sick people kept increasing due to the lack of vitamins from not eating any fresh vegetables. When we found a weed that seemed edible, we tested if it was poisonous or not by giving it to cows and horses first. When its safety was proven, everyone ate that weed. Everything around us looked like food. In the neighborhood where Japanese were detained, almost all the weed was eaten up. I don’t know if it was because we needed vitamin C or simply because we wanted to eat anything we could.
