On Our Way to Siberia

While we were camping for the night's stay on our way to Siberia, Japanese soldiers were very busy since they were urged to draw water, cook, and look for firewood. Among such labors, water drawing was the toil. The only stream we had was the one that flowed under numerous rotten corpses, and we had to close our eyes to draw the water from it. There was no room to complain that the water was dirty. No matter what we used, the cooked rice was tasty, so the quality of water did not matter.
