Miserable Soldier-Beggar

There were things that always occurred on our way back from our duty. It is very embarrassing to even recall this, but Japanese soldiers jumped at any remnants of vegetables or fish, beef or pork bones discarded at the sides of the road. Now it is hard to imagine how we did it. It was truly a desolate and sad experience. Even though we all knew that the Soviet soldiers riduculed us from far away, the soldiers who got what they wanted displayed pride in their features right in front of them. What a shame!

Sometimes, while we competed with each other to pick up such remnants and bones on the road, the Soviet soldiers urged us to hurry up and keep walking. That was even more humiliating.
